Departure Process at Peshawar Airport

  1. Security checkpoint: Peshawar airport has an outer security checkpoint before you can enter the terminal building. Have your ticket/booking confirmation and ID ready. This adds 10-15 minutes to the process, so plan accordingly.
  2. Check-in: Online check-in available on most international airlines. Airport counters open 3 hours before international, 2 hours before domestic flights. The terminal is compact and easy to navigate.
  3. Security screening: Standard screening after check-in. Liquid restrictions apply (100ml max). Remove electronics from bags.
  4. Immigration (international): Present passport and boarding pass. Processing is straightforward at PEW given the lower volume compared to Islamabad or Karachi.
  5. Departure lounge: Basic facilities including a small duty-free shop, cafeteria, and prayer room. Gates announced 30-45 minutes before departure.

Departure Tips

  • Getting to the airport: The airport is only 5km from central Peshawar. Allow 15-30 minutes by car. Careem and InDriver available (PKR 200-500). The airport is on the University Road side, easily accessible from University Town, Hayatabad, and the old city.
  • Security: Expect multiple security checkpoints before and inside the terminal. Arrive with extra time. The outer perimeter check is unique to Peshawar and adds to the process.
  • International flights: Arrive 3 hours before. Most international flights go to Gulf destinations (Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Jeddah, Riyadh) serving the large KPK diaspora. Flights are often full, especially before Eid and during summer holidays.
  • Domestic flights: Arrive 2 hours before. PIA operates routes to Karachi and Islamabad. Serene Air and airblue also serve select routes.
  • Baggage: Gulf carrier allowances are generous (30-40kg). PIA economy: 30kg international, 20kg domestic. Many Gulf-bound passengers travel with heavy luggage, so check-in can take longer.
  • Currency: Exchange remaining PKR at the airport or in Saddar Bazaar before departure. PKR is difficult to exchange outside Pakistan.
  • Shopping: Peshawar is famous for Peshawari chappals (sandals), Pashmina shawls, dry fruits from Afghanistan, and gemstones. Buy souvenirs before heading to the airport as duty-free options are limited.
