Pakistan offers some of the greatest trekking on earth. Five of the world's fourteen 8,000-metre peaks are here, along with dozens of 7,000-metre giants and thousands of unnamed summits. From easy day hikes in the Margalla Hills to the epic 18-day trek to K2 base camp, Pakistan's mountain trails cater to every level of experience. The infrastructure for trekking is well-established, with experienced local guides, porters and operators available in Gilgit, Skardu and Karimabad. Whether you want a gentle walk through apricot orchards or a month on the Baltoro Glacier, Pakistan has a trek for you.

Permits & Guides
- Open zones: Many treks in Hunza, Gilgit and Skardu (below base camps) do not require a permit. Includes Rakaposhi BC, Passu Glacier, Fairy Meadows, Patundas.
- Restricted zones: K2 area, Concordia, Gondogoro La, Snow Lake, Nanga Parbat BC require permits from the Ministry of Tourism (arranged by operator). Licensed guide mandatory.
- Costs: Trekking permits cost $50-200 depending on the zone. Operators include this in their packages.
- Guides: Highly recommended for all multi-day treks. Essential for glacier treks. Local guides from Gilgit, Skardu or Karimabad cost $20-50/day.
- Porters: Available and affordable. Budget $15-25/day per porter. Standard load is 25 kg. Tips expected at end of trek.
