- Visa on Arrival / E-Visa: If you have an e-visa, show the printed confirmation with your passport. For visa on arrival, proceed to the designated counter before the main queue. You need: passport (6+ months validity), return ticket, hotel booking, and sufficient funds. Fee varies by nationality (typically 5-100 USD cash). Pakistan offers e-visas to 175+ nationalities.
- NADRA counter: The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has a counter in the arrivals area for NICOP holders and overseas Pakistanis needing identity verification.
- Baggage claim: Collect luggage from the carousel. Trolleys available free. Report lost or damaged baggage at the airline desk near the carousels.
- Customs: Green channel (nothing to declare) or Red channel. Duty-free: 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars. Currency up to $10,000 USD without declaration. Alcohol import is prohibited (Pakistan is a dry country). Prohibited items: narcotics, firearms, alcohol, pork products.
- Arrivals hall: SIM card kiosks (Jazz, Zong, Telenor), currency exchange counters, ATMs, and transport options available immediately outside customs exit.
Arrival Tips
- SIM card: Buy a Jazz, Zong or Telenor prepaid SIM in the arrivals hall. Cost: PKR 500-1,000 with 10-30GB data. Bring your passport for registration. Activation takes 15-30 minutes. Jazz has the best coverage overall, including Northern Pakistan.
- Currency exchange: Exchange counters in the arrivals hall accept USD, GBP, and EUR. Rates are reasonable. Change enough for transport (PKR 2,000-5,000) and exchange the rest at banks in the city for slightly better rates.
- ATMs: HBL, UBL, MCB, and Allied Bank ATMs available. International Visa and Mastercard accepted. Standard foreign withdrawal fees apply.
- Transport: Pre-paid taxi desk with fixed rates to Islamabad (PKR 2,000-3,000). Careem and InDriver ride-hailing apps work well (PKR 1,200-2,000). The airport is 30km from Islamabad centre and 40km from Rawalpindi.
- Weather: Islamabad can be cold in winter (Nov-Feb) with temperatures dropping to 2-5°C at night. Summers (May-Aug) are hot at 38-42°C. Monsoon season July-September brings heavy rain.
