Marriage Certificate Registration at Pakistan Embassies

Pakistani citizens who marry abroad should register their marriage with the nearest Pakistan embassy or high commission to ensure legal recognition in Pakistan and update their NADRA records.

Types of Marriage Registration

1. Islamic Marriage (Nikah) Performed Abroad

If your nikah was performed abroad by an imam or Islamic scholar, you must register it at the Pakistan embassy. The embassy will attest your nikah nama (marriage contract) and forward the details to NADRA for updating the national family record. Both spouses should be present during registration.

2. Civil Marriage Performed Abroad

Civil marriages performed under the laws of the host country are also recognised by Pakistan. You need to submit the civil marriage certificate (with apostille/authentication) to the embassy for attestation. This updates your marital status in NADRA records.

3. Marriage Attestation for Use in Pakistan

If you need your foreign marriage certificate attested for use in Pakistan (e.g., for property transfer, family visa, or spousal passport), the embassy can attest the document after proper notarisation and government authentication.

Required Documents

  • Nikah nama (original, signed by witnesses) OR civil marriage certificate (original with apostille)
  • Both spouses' Pakistan passports (original and photocopies)
  • Both spouses' CNIC/NICOP cards (or foreign spouse's passport if non-Pakistani)
  • Two passport photographs of each spouse
  • Witnesses' ID documents (passport or NICOP of at least two witnesses)
  • Completed marriage registration form (available at the embassy)
  • Registration fee
For marriages to non-Pakistani spouses: The foreign spouse's passport, birth certificate, and proof of single status (or divorce decree/death certificate of former spouse) may also be required.

Why Register Your Marriage?

  • Required for spousal visa applications (family reunification)
