Neelum Valley Guide 2026

Neelum Valley is one of Pakistan's most beautiful and least-visited destinations. Located in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), this 200 km valley follows the turquoise Neelum River through dense forests, past traditional wooden villages, terraced rice paddies and snow-capped peaks. The valley gets its name from the river, which appears “neelum” (sapphire blue) as it courses through the mountains. With the Line of Control running along the ridgeline above, Neelum Valley has an edge-of-the-world feeling that adds to its mystique. Highlights include the ancient Sharda Fort, the hilltop village of Arang Kel, and some of the best river rafting in Pakistan.

Key Destinations

Keran

A small town on the Neelum River directly opposite the Indian-administered village of Tithwal. You can see the Indian flag and soldiers across the narrow river. The proximity to the LoC makes Keran a unique experience. Good hotels and guesthouses available. 90 km from Muzaffarabad (3 hours).

Sharda

Home to the ruins of Sharda Fort and the ancient Sharda Peeth (University of Sharda), once one of the most important centres of Hindu and Buddhist learning in the subcontinent. The ruins sit on a hilltop above the Neelum River with commanding views. The stone walls and carved doorways hint at the site's former glory. 130 km from Muzaffarabad.

Kel

The last major village in the Neelum Valley, surrounded by dense pine forests and snow-capped peaks. Kel is the gateway to Arang Kel, a beautiful hilltop village accessible only by a steep 2-hour hike or a chairlift (PKR 500). Arang Kel's terraced fields and wooden houses with mountains behind make it one of the most photographed spots in AJK. 155 km from Muzaffarabad (5-6 hours).

River Rafting

The Neelum River offers excellent white-water rafting with Class II-IV rapids depending on the section and water level. Operators in Muzaffarabad and along the valley offer half-day and full-day trips (PKR 3,000-8,000 per person). Best from May to September when water levels are optimal.
